Believe
Hebrews 11:1 says the same thing in other words. "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
I've been seeing the word believe around a lot lately. It is on bumper stickers, tee shirts, and posters. Just the word Believe. It is as if it doesn't really matter what you believe. The belief itself is what is important. So we can believe in Santa Clause, fairies, or God, it doesn't matter which as long as you believe.
Now, I love fairy tales, science fiction and fantasy as much as anybody. It is fun to pretend and it is fun to wonder "what if...." But the value of a faith or a belief must depend on the object of that faith, not on how hard we may believe.
We as Christians believe in God who became one of us. Madeleine L'Engle called it the "Glorious Impossible," the birth of the Christ Child. If this is the truth, then it doesn't matter how much you believe or not. In fact, it seems to me that this allows us some room for doubts. Unlike Tinker Bell, Christ's existance doesn't depend on how much you or I believe. What does depend on our belief is our eternal relationship with him.
